A new forum for the worldwide interactive entertainment industry
Two days after announcing the Online Game Development Conference
(OGDC), Evergreen Events reveals plans for yet another event today,
namely a full-scale Global Games Summit (GGS) whose exclusive focus is
the increasingly global nature of the interactive entertainment
industry, including the incredible potential that emerging markets such
as India, China, and Brazil offer.
GGS will take place on May 7-8, 2007 at the luxurious Fairmont Olympic
Hotel in downtown Seattle, and will conclude on May 9th with a charity
golf tournament held at a premier golf course in Seattle. All proceeds
will go to Child’s Play, the charity created by Penny Arcade’s Mike
Krahulik and Jerry Holkins two years ago that benefits
Children’s Hospitals across the globe.
The idea has already been embraced by a number of influential people
from the games industry. "It’s becoming clear that a global perspective
is increasingly important for the interactive entertainment industry as
traditional distribution gives way to a more online-centric approach.
The 2007 Global Games Summit will address the trend towards
globalization head on, helping game companies define their roles on the
worldwide stage, and establish business relationships with companies
from an ever-increasing number of important game markets," commented
James Hursthouse, CEO of Online Game Services Inc. and the GGS Advisory
Board Chair.
Emiliano de Castro, Vice-President of Institutional Relations,
Abragames, offered an international perspective: "GGS represents a
terrific opportunity to talk about the challenges of the global
marketplace and present new alternatives for the games industry. I
expect this event will be a perfect place to showcase new players and
potential partners from emerging markets to industry leaders."
"The overall games market is not only growing rapidly but has become a
truly global industry. For example, the worldwide games market as of
2005 had revenue of $29 billion, while the North American share was $12
billion of that. By 2011 we forecast the global marketplace will have
ballooned to $44 billion, with $26 billion coming from outside North
America. Clearly, the market outside the United States represents an
enormous opportunity to prepared, well-informed game developers,
publishers and other interests in that revenue stream,” said David
Cole, President of DFC Intelligence.
The Global Games Summit will feature informative sessions from leading
industry experts from all over the world, a business-meeting matrix to
facilitate company-to-company meetings, and a range of networking
events designed to foster and establish new relationships.

Polishing mostly related to online multiplayer performance
With Saints Row finally on the streets and in the hands of gamers, if
you’ve been experiencing issues with the game running in widescreen on
your TV or frustrated with the multiplayer performance (both of which
we haven’t heard too much about, but still), developer Volition
revealed on the official message boards they’re already working on a
patch to fix the first aspect and polish up the second.
There’s no release date for the patch yet, but scope out what’s on the agenda so far:
# Improvements to the way the game handles packet loss and
bandwidth management between players. This will address the issues
commonly cited as "lag", and general synchronization problems between
the players’ clients (vehicles/players warping around, etc).
# The system for rating a player’s quality-of-service has been
improved, and made less conservative. This means you’ll see many more
matches with 10-12 player limits.
# Fix for the "clothes stealing" exploit in multiplayer
# Fix for widescreen formatting issues in certain resolutions
# Changes to Matchmaking phase, to get players in the game faster
Volition also promises to investigate any further claims of technical
problems as players work through the game, and it’s entirely possible
the current patch could encompass more before released.

Another game joins Valve’s growing distribution service.
What started as a method for Valve to easily distribute their
self-developed content to fans has turned into a full-fledged online
service for niche games that wouldn’t find a proper place on store
shelves and even upcoming blockbusters like Dark Messiah of Might and
Magic.
When the action RPG arrives at retail in October, the game will also be
added to Steam. "I am a long-time fan of the Might & Magic
franchise," said Gabe Newell, Valve President and Co-founder, in the
announcement release. "Valve is delighted to have Dark Messiah of Might
& Magic on Steam’s growing list of new releases for the holiday
season. But, more importantly, I just can’t wait to play it."
Unsurprisingly, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic also happens to use Valve’s Source engine.

The saga ends, but why did it ever begin? Questions remain.
It’s no secret — Assassin’s Creed is officially coming to the Xbox
360. We expect official PR in the near future, but the October issue of
Electronic Gaming Monthly confirms that the Ubisoft Montreal project is
coming to Microsoft’s next-gen platform. Earlier this week, Ubisoft
confirmed a PC version of the title and from the pages of the October
EGM came the Xbox 360 confirmation.
