Priceless (Hors de prix)

Audrey Tautou, Gad Elmaleh, story&directed by Pierre Salvadori.

Just got back from the cinema. I know what you’re going to think: “No shooting, no fighting, no sex – of course he didn’t like it!” Well… you’re pretty close! But no matter the mood (which was obviously for something different), I am capable of pretty much enjoying good romantic comedies (Love Actually, Notting Hill). This one was just… too ‘light’. I wish I could call it at least an eye-candy, but expecting little, little I got. A bit over-advertised. Even the ladies (90% of the audience) did not seem too impressed… Although I managed not to fall asleep in the cinema even though I slept only about 3 hours this night šŸ˜€

It’s worth to add I still think it is one of the best of the current shows available…
So, what’s new in DVD rentals… šŸ˜‰

Luc Besson’s Angel(A)

“ANGEL-A” – New movie from famous director, is it what we could expect from him, the Luc Besson action type, with humor and fast cars?

Surprise I met in cinema was quite outstanding. No fast cars, no aliens, no explosions, NO wasted time! šŸ™‚

Black&white picture of a man on the edge -the edge of tiredness, the edge of desperation, the edge of bridge. His only hope and last resort comes from out of nowhere, is 2m tall sexy blonde… and jumps from the bridge… A story of life in the shades of gray, where black turnes to white and white shades to black. And with a great sense of humor too.

“Am I bound to loose?” The question everybody asks himself sometimes. Besson tries to answer it in an original manner. For me it is the first film of his since a long time that can not only provide good entertainment but also leaves us to consider ourselves and the world around us for a while. A film which you will go back to in your thought or perhaps even on DVD. My recommendation, you won’t waste your time! šŸ™‚ Bon apettite!

Terry Pratchett – a phenomenon

He leaves behind a keyboard in Wiltshire and says he doesn’t want to get life, because it feels as though he’s trying to lead three already. He is one of the most popular authors writing today. I find his phenomenon in surprising variety of people who really enjoy his novels, from teens to adults, from stall sellers to directors, just name a type of person! His most popular and the biggest novel series is situated in a place called Discworld. A fantastic (in all meanings of that word) world. It’s not like anything you’ve ever seen (unless you’ve seen the Discworld šŸ˜‰ ). All my efforts to describe it would be nothing more than a terrible failure. Enough to say that the amazing sense of humor Pratchett has is combined with unbelievable stories and characters. I’ve seen people laughing to tears telling episodes from the books, I’ve laughed to tears more than once reading them.

The series starts from “The Colour Of Magic” and “Light Fantastic” which basically tell the adventures of Rincewind -let’s say a wizard, and his companion Luggage. The series continues with over twenty novels, the latest one is called Going Postal, but believe me no matter which point of the series you start at you will really like to read all of them, and I mean all of them šŸ™‚

What’s more to say? Need a good laugh, alter reality, exciting read? Terry Pratchett is the answer!

Pablo Francisco

Pablo Francisco is a phenomenon.

Any doubts? ā€œOh my God, itā€™s a miracleā€. I could describe him by simple enumeration of his gags. ā€œDo you know itā€™s truth?ā€. I canā€™t even talk seriously about this guy. I bet he wouldnā€™t like it if I did.

First, I pay homage to his ability of imitating someoneā€™s voice. Listening to Pablo with your eyes closed, you see Schwarzenegger right behind you. ā€œListen to meā€¦ Theyā€™re trying to take my tortillasā€¦ā€. The range of moods he can imitate is infinite. Psycho woman, excited Mexican speaking Englishā€¦ even Droopy dog makes no barrier for him.

Maybe Iā€™m not into the American culture, but I havenā€™t heard of a Latino guy whoā€™d achieve such succes in North America. ā€œYou donā€™t even look like a Pabloā€¦ You look like a Bobby.ā€ I am glad to see that a Latino makes some noise on the other side of the Rio Bravo and he is not one of the Zapatistasā€¦ But the fact he is not a ā€˜pure north-Americanā€™ doesnā€™t limit his jokes to just one social or national group. Thereā€™s nothing sacred for him: from chippendales dancers to movie previews guy, from Latino girls to Chinese barbersā€¦ E-ve-ry-thing!

I watch his show everyday and I canā€™t stop laughing. On the other hand, I wonder, this can be just a fad. I hope not. Well, I believe in Faulknerā€™s words telling that ā€˜there is no such thing as wasā€™. When I see a Celine Dion poster, I imagine the big head she has. And I am sure that I will be imagining it till my memory goes away.

For now, Iā€™m waiting for new shows and you can visit Pablo Francisco official website. Have fun!

Peep Show

Mark and Jez

Ladies and Gentlemen,
we are exceedingly fortunate because we live in a great era for arts, drama, music, film, television etc etc…great advances are being made all the time, envelopes are pushed, boundaries destroyed and many great things created.
One such thing is a particular favourite of mine, a sitcom called Peep Show that appeared on channel 4 for a debut series a year or so ago. There a few special qualities that set Peep Show apart from other, run-of-the-mill sitcoms. Plot lines revolve around two main characters, flatmates Mark and Jeremy; “socialy dysfunctional in their own ways” (or so the blurb on the back of my DVD box tells me) – so far, so standard i hear you cry, but what makes Peep Show special is that we get to hear the bizare, twisted, over exagerated thoughts of Mark and Jeremy and every camera angle is from the view-point of one of the characters. This might not sound like much, but in reality its what makes Peep Show that extra bit funnier than your average sitcom. The cringe-worthy embaresment that we feel for Mark as he flails at the top of a charity bungee-jump crane or hides in the cupboard to avoid a collegue is multiplied as we recognise small parts of our own character traits, or those of people we know in his strange actions. We have heard the train of thought that has lead the character into this crazy situation and that makes it all the funnier.
Peep Show has just finished it’s third series which sadly does not seem to be quite as good as the preceeding two. I tried to tape the series but unfortunately when i put the tape in for the last episode, in a spectaular display of inept-ness i managed to tape over an episode and a half that i already had with slected bits of a Friends DVD. I guess i’ll just have to wait until pirate copies start appearing on eBay…
